Oftentimes, we are faced with numerous options, from which we have to make a decision. It could be something as trivial as what to wear or where to grab lunch. Other times, it is a life changing decision like choosing a partner or career choice, decisions that are tough to make, because they could leave an enduring mark on our lives.

Some decisions are routine, while others are complex and have risky consequences. This is why it is important for everyone to master the art of effective decision making. Good decision making is one of the most fundamental life skills that everyone must possess.

For decisions with potentially far- reaching consequences, it is beneficial to have a systemic and rational decision-making process. This organized approach makes it possible for us to look at the important factors holistically, analyze them and come up with good decisions.

The first step in making effective decisions is to identify your goal. This is very important as it guides you and ensures you make decisions that take you closer to it. For example, if your goal is to become a college graduate, every good decision you make should take you closer to achieving your dream.

The next step is to source for information regarding the subject matter. The internet is a vast ocean of information, dive into it and get everything you need! You can also read books and newspapers. It is very important that you are armed with the right information to face the decision-making process head-on. You can also make enquiries from people that have had to make similar decisions in the past. Learn from their mistakes.

After gathering your information, the next thing to do is to clearly list out every possible alternative. Make sure your list is as wide as possible. Remember that you could decide to go with any of the alternatives after careful consideration.

The next step is where you weigh your options. This is a very crucial step in decision making. It involves carefully analyzing each option and arriving at a possible outcome for it. At this stage, each alternative should be meticulously scrutinized, its advantages and disadvantages should be clearly stated out, this helps you to have an idea of the effects that your decision would have on you. It also boosts your confidence in the decision-making process.

After carefully going through the aforementioned steps, it’s time for you to finally choose the alternative that best suits you. Remember that this is your decision and go with your gut. Formulate a plan to implement your decision and stick to it.

Finally, to make your decision-making process foolproof, you should review it after making your decision, evaluate the result and check if it is in keeping with your set goals. If it is, you can continue repeating the same steps for decision making. If the result does not align with your goals, then you should troubleshoot the process and make changes, to make it more suitable for you.

The decision-making process is affected by a number of factors such as lack of vital information, peer pressure information overload, emotional attachment and past experiences. Do your own research and get the information you need, get away from unnecessary pressure and try to be as objective as possible while trying to figure out the best decision for you.

To summarize, we make decisions every day of our lives, luckily, some of them are very easy and are not consequential, others are difficult and require critical thinking and analysis to make the right choice. Develop a systematic approach for making these tough decisions, reflect on your past mistakes and learn from them. Make your own decisions so you don’t entrust your future on others’ hands.
