In the quest for personal development, it is very important to set goals that one wants to achieve. Think of personal development as a race, now, liken setting personal goals to the start of the race. Clearly, the race start can make or mar the race for athletes. In a similar vein, setting personal goals is the first step towards achieving one’s goals. This shows that it is a very important aspect of personal development.

A goal is an ambition or aim that a person hopes to achieve. People set different goals for themselves; it could be health & fitness goals, financial goals, social goals, career goals etc

Goal setting is a very powerful process by which a person maps out a workable plan to guide and motivate them towards a goal. It is a very important step towards actualizing one’s dreams because it ensures that every action a person takes (even the seemingly inconsequential ones) brings one close to his/her goals.

There are a thousand and one reasons why setting your personal goals is a must do for everyone but I will just mention a few of them. First of all, setting your goals give you focus, it makes you conscious of what and where your target is. Imagine going to a shooting range blindfolded, except you have some extra-terrestrial powers, it would be virtually impossible to hit your targets without seeing them. That is how dangerous not having a target or focus is! Setting a goal would prevent this. Having a specific target positions you for success.

It also makes you commit to your vision, gives you motivation to stay on your grind because you know what exactly it is you want to achieve. Setting goals also provide some sort of metrics to gauge how close a person is to his/her goals.

When you want to set your goals, be careful with your expectations. Do not set unattainable goals. For example, if your financial goal is to be wealthy, you cannot say you’d be as rich as Jeff Bezos within the next year, that is almost impossible. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. This goes without saying that your goals should also be challenging. Challenging goals make you reach your potential. If your goals are too easy, you’d be bored and demotivated after a while.

You should also make sure your goals are specific, do not set ambiguous goals. Clearly spell your goals out. Know the whats and the whens. Put a timeframe to achieving your set goals. This puts you on your toes and makes you put in work towards achieving the goals at the right time.

Finally, ALWAYS write your goals down. It is very important and I cannot stress this enough. You are more likely to act on your set goals when you put them into writing. After writing them down, frame them and put them in a place where you get to see them every day.

As you proceed along your personal development journey, always set your goals appropriately. Write them down and stick to them religiously. Remember that great things never come from comfort zones and that your limitation is only your imagination.
